FAZER VISITOR CENTER WINS THE FINNISH STEEL PRIZE 2016

The new Fazer Visitor Center has been awarded with the Finnish Steel Prize 2016. The winner was chosen from nine finalists representing contemporary Finnish steel construction.

LINTULA, SIROLA AND SUMMANEN NOMINATED PROFESSORS

All three partners of the K2S Architects were nominated as Professors Adjunct at the Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture, Department of Architecture. Kimmo Lintula, Niko Sirola and Mikko Summanen will hold the professorship of Building Technology until the end of 2017.

FAZER VISITOR CENTER GROUNDBREAKING

The groundbreaking ceremony for the new Fazer visitor center was held today in Vantaa. K2S Architects won the invitational architecture competition to design the visitor center and the new meeting center next to the existing factories in Vaarala. There will be exhibition spaces, a cafe, a factory store, event spaces as well as a green room housing cocoa trees in the visitor center.

HELSINKI OLYMPIC STADIUM PLANS UNVEILED

The latest plans for the refurbishment and extension of the functionalist landmark Helsinki Olympic stadium have been published. The construction will start in the beginning of 2016 and the stadium will be reopened in 2019. The estimated cost of the project is 209 M€. www.stadion.fi/prostadion

ARCTIA HQ NOMINATED FOR THE MIES VAN DER ROHE 2015 -AWARD

The European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture – Mies van der Rohe Award is one of the most important prizes for architecture within Europe. It is granted every two years to acknowledge and reward quality architectural production in Europe. The Prize will be awarded at the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion in Barcelona in January 2015. Arctia has previously received Architizer A+Award and RIL-prize.

THE BOOK IS OUT!

K2S – Beyond wall of sound monography was released last week in Stockholm. The book was published by the Swedish publisher Arvinius+Orfeus Publishing AB. It is the first complete monography of K2S Architects. Essays for the book were written by Toyo Ito, Hans Ibelings and Juhani Pallasmaa. The book is currently on show in the Frankfurt book fair. HONORARY MENTION IN POHJOLA-TALO COMPETITION

In the entry Pohjola building is developed by introducing a hybrid program which consists of housing, commercial, health, sports and medical services. The building block gets a totally new character when the five new multi-purpose buildings is added. The total area of the project is 135 000 m2.

WIENERBERGER BRICK AWARD 2014 FOR PAASITORNI

The Paasitorni hotel and conference center has been awarded the 2014 Wienerberger brick special award. The prize ceremony was held in Vienna last Thursday. The international jury, led by Priztker prize laureate Wang Shu chose the seven winners from more than 300 preselected entries from 26 countries and 50 nominees.

HELSINKI MULTIPURPOSE ARENA & SPORTSHOTEL

The preliminary design for a 13 000 seat multipurpose arena and a 240 room hotel were revealed today. The site is located on Mäntymäki in the Helsinki Olympic Park right next to the Olympic stadium. The planning was commissioned by the Helsinki City Planning Department.

Arctia Headquarters has won the Architizer 2014 A+Award. The floating office building was chosen as A+ Award Popular Choice Winner in the Typology Category: Office Building Low Rise. There were thousands of entries from more than 100 countries. The prize ceremony will be held in New York on May 15th.

FIRST PRIZE IN ESPOO

K2S teamed up together with Byman & Ruokonen landscape architects to win first prize in a competition in Espoo Finland. The program consists of a kindergarten, community house and a park area. The project is a low carbon footprint pilot project.

K2S RECEIVES RIL-PRIZE 2013

Arctia Shipping icebreakers head quarters has received the Finnish Association of Civil Engineers´ RIL-prize 2013. “Arctia Shipping head quarters combines Finnish high quality architecture and ship building engineering in a completely new way.” says the president of Aalto-university Tuula Teeri, who made the final decision.

FIRST PRIZE IN VAASA

K2S received first prize in an invited competition for two mixed use city blocks in the center of Vaasa. The 21 000 sqm project consists of five new mixed use buildings and reuse of an old school building.

INTERNATIONAL ARCHITECTURE AWARD 2013 FOR HOTEL PAASITORNI

The Chicago Atheneum Museum of Architecture and Design has awarded Hotel Paasitorni in International Architecture Awards 2013. All winners will be premiered at the 14th International Biennal of Architecture in Buenos Aires. The exhibition "The City and the World" will be arranged from September till October 2013. After Buenos Aires the exhibition will travel in Europe, opening in Athens, Greece.

FLOATING OFFICE OPENED

Ice breaker company´s floating office building was opened this week in Merikasarmi pier Katajanokka. The building has raised great interest worldwide. K2S will continue with future floating projects.

ARCTIA HQ TOWED TO KATAJANOKKA

Early Monday morning the floating office building was towed to its’ final location in Merikasarmi pier from Arctech STX shipyards in Hernesaari. The building will be finalized before the summer.

K2S received third prize in an open competition for Hämeenkyrö ecological elementary school and kindergarten. There were 84 entries in total.

MÄNTYMÄKI VISION REVEALED

The future development plans for Helsinki Olympic park and Mäntymäki area were published this Thursday. Our vision is to develop the area as the most important center for sports and health in Finland. The area will become the “Silicon valley” of sports in Helsinki.

City of Helsinki Building Control Commission has awarded Kamppi Chapel for its high level of architecture, innovative wooden construction and for its new type of functional concept.

Swedish magazine Form chose Kamppi Chapel the building of the year within Nordic countries. Kamppi Chapel is also nominated for the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture Mies van der Rohe Award.

FINNISH MODEL SCHOOL IN RIYADH

K2S Architects designs a school for 3000 students in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The project is the first step in education export co-operation with FCG Finnish Consulting Group, University of Helsinki and Future Learning Finland.

K2S and friends wins final against Helin & Co. after a dramatic penalty shoot out. K2S is now the only triple winner team in history of the tournament.

PAASITORNI OPENED

Hotel and congress center opens on August 14th. The seven story addition characterized by white customized brick completes the protected historical quarters. The 13 360 sqm project consists of 170 hotel rooms, new conference rooms, restaurants and a completely new level of logistics.

OLYMPIC STADIUM FUTURE PLANS REVEALED

The future development plans for Helsinki Olympic Stadium were published this Tuesday. Extensive plans include covering the whole stadium, additional public and personnel spaces as well as complete refurbishment of the stadium.

Arctia shipping and K2S presented plans for the floating office building in Katajanokka harbour. The black steel building floats side by side to the monumental ice breakers and provides spaces for Arctia's ground crew.

KAMPPI CHAPEL PREVIEW

The protective tent around the wooden chapel was taken down with great media interest. During the design capital weekend a large number of visitors were given a tour on the chapel construction site.

K2S VICTORIOUS IN FUTSAL

K2S Architects wins the first indoor futsal-tournament for architects in Hakaniemi, Helsinki. K2S won all five games and defeated the tournament’s sponsors in the final 2-1. The trophy is donated by ALA Architects for the annual tournament.

HELSINKI FAIR CENTER PARKING EXTENSION COMPLETED

A green customized aluminum curtain gives strong identity to the two floor extension of an eighties parking facility. The aluminum sheets are folded into V-shape and perforated with a unique leaf pattern.  On the roof floor there are sports fields for parallel use.

CHAPEL WOODEN FRAME REACHES FULL HEIGHT

The main wooden frame is in place and the shape of the building can already be seen in Helsinki city center. The construction of Chapel of Silence is estimated to be completed in March 2012. You can follow the project on Facebook on the topic “Kampin Kappeli”.

K2S SHORTLISTED IN WAN AWARDS 2011 – HEALTHCARE

Espoo hospital was shortlisted in the WAN AWARDS 2011 – Healthcare Sector – Unbuilt Projects. The project was chosen together with 5 other unbuilt projects among the 29 entries in this category. K2S was the only Finnish firm shortlisted in this category. The winner will be announced 21.6.2011.

ENTER ACKNOWLEDGED IN ”THE BEST SCHOOL IN THE WORLD”-BOOK

ENTER – Sipoo upper secondary school was featured and chosen as cover art in “The best school in the world”-book published by the Museum of Finnish Architecture. The project is also a part of the exhibition in the Museum of Finnish Architecture 8.6-25.9.2011 “The best school in the world”.

CHAPEL CONSTRUCTION STARTS IN MARCH

Kamppi Chapel of Silence is expected to be completed in the beginning of 2012. The Chapel is selected as one of the World Design Capital Helsinki 2012 projects.

K2S DREAMTEAM WINS FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT 2010

FC K2S wins the annual PES Invitational tournament with a clean game. Twelve teams participated in the football tournament for architects in sunny Helsinki city center. In the final K2S defeated Helin & Co by 3-1.

K2S AWARDED TWICE

K2S received two awards in The International Architectural Awards for the projects Kamppi Chapel of Silence and Espoo Hospital. The Chicago Athenaeum’s 2010 award ceremony was held in Mexico City and 95 projects from 38 nations were selected to receive the award. K2S projects were the only awarded projects in Finland.

K2S has been invited to represent Finland in the Scandinavian architecture exhibition arranged by Stockholm Furniture Fair. The exhibition is titled “What were they thinking?” and focuses on the design processes. K2S will present Villa Sarvilahti in the exhibition.

ELECTRICITY STATIONS OPENED

Two projects for Helsingin Energia have recently been completed: a switching station and an electrical substation. Both buildings are located in Pukinmäki in Northern Helsinki. The buildings will be inaugurated on the 5th of November.

HOTEL PAASITORNI

Today the plans for a new hotel in the monumental Paasitorni building in Helsinki have been officially revealed. The hotel will feature 170 rooms, part of which will be located in a new building on the courtyard. Construction is expected to start early 2010.

NEWLY DRAWN EXHIBITION

K2S is featured in the Newly Drawn exhibition in Kaapelitehdas, Helsinki on 9, 10 and 11 September. The exhibition is part of Open House Helsinki. Apart from showing works and projects, the exhibition presents the people behind some of the offices that have drawn attention in recent years.

FIRST TOURIST INFO KIOSK OPENED

The first kiosk for Helsinki City Tourist Information has been opened on the Kauppatori, in the very center of Helsinki. During the first three hours, over 500 people have already paid the information kiosk a visit.

K2S PROJECTS PUBLISHED IN 10x10 BOOK

Four projects by K2S have been published in the book 10x10_3, part of the acclaimed 10x10 series by Phaedon publishers. The book presents an overview of contemporary architecture and is available in bookstores around the world. K2S Architects is the only Finnish firm featured in this edition.

K2S received the first prize in the second and final round of the international architecture competition for the design of a hospital in Espoo, Finland.

KAMPPI CHAPEL DESIGN APPROVED BY CITY PLANNING OFFICIALS

The detailed plan for a ecumenical chapel in Helsinki's central district of Kamppi has been approved by the city planning board of Helsinki. Completion of the project is expected at the end of 2011.

HONOURABLE PRIZE FOR EXPO PAVILLION DESIGN

K2S was awarded with a honourable prize for its proposal for the Finnish pavilion at the Expo 2010 in Shanghai.

K2S WINS CHIGAGO ATHENAEUM INTERNATIONAL ARCHITECTURE AWARD

K2S has received the Chicago Atheneum International Architecture Award 2008 for the design of the ENTER upper secondary school in Sipoo, Finland. The project is the only project in Finland receiving this award in 2008.

Together with the other awarded projects, the ENTER school will be presented on exhibitions in Florence (SESV Santa Verdiana) and Athens (Contemporary Space Athens ).

EXHIBITIONS IN HELSINKI, LONDON, PARIS AND AUSTRIA

Various projects by K2S are currently on display in a number of exhibitions. The ENTER school is on display both at the Museum of Finnish Architecture in Helsinki (until 28.09.2008), and the Cité de l'Architecture et du Patrimoine in Paris (until 07.09.2008).

In the fall, another exhibition on Finnish architecture will be shown in various locations in Austria and Germany, starting at Vienna University of Technology.

Until 20.08.2008, the ENTER school will be featured in an exhibition called Learning Environments, which is hosted by the Finnish Embassy in London as part of the London Festival of Architecture.
